Ultimate Guide to Folding Collapsible Water Bottle

But what about the collapsible water bottle option?

At first it might seem a tad gimmicky, but this foldable water bottle variety is here to stay.

Is it a viable green option?

If so, which one should you buy?

Pros to Folding water bottle

  1. Lightweight
  2. Packable
  3. Foldable
  4. Great for backpacking or hiking
  5.  Some are made in the USA

Cons to Folding water bottle

  1. Made with plastic materials
  2. Most hold less volume than traditional hard-shelled bottles
  3. Foldable: most don’t stay upright easily
  4. More seams equate to greater leaking potential

collapsible water bottle

Folding water bottles are made of plastic, are they eco-friendly and safe?

Some are not: read carefully before buying!

Warning: cheap collapsible water bottles, such as most free promotional ones, will leak!

You’re better off spending a few more dollars on one of the ones below.

BPA-Free Collapsible Water Bottles

The options listed below are all BPA-free.

They are all reusable, and all require less energy to pack, carry, and create than heavier stainless steel.

Platypus PlusBottle:

The Platypus bottle is BPA-free, made in the USA, and holds a full liter of water.

All Platypus collapsible bottles are made to fit in car bottle holders (though they sometimes fall over) and all the tops in the Platypus line are interchangeable, a big plus.

The PlusBottle is coated with what Platypus calls its Slimeguard antimicrobial treatment, which is a fancy way of saying it’s treated with a natural (and safe) coating of silver ion which keeps the water fresh and taste-free.

The PlusBottle is on Amazon.

Nalgene Wide Mouth Canteen:

The Nalgene bottle is also BPA-free, and holds more liquid at 1.5 liters or 3.0 liters.

It’s stiffer than the Platypus, and instead of folding it, travelers can roll it.

I really like that its wide mouth fits ice cubes and almost all filtration systems.

It’s best for backpackers, as the wide mouth might be a detriment for kids and casual travelers.

The 48 oz version can be found at Amazon.

Vapur Element Collapsible bottle:

The Vapur (also made in the USA and BPA-free) includes what it calls a SuperCap over its wide-mouth, which makes it perfect for adding ice cube and easily sipping from.

According to numerous Amazon reviews (this is the only bottle of the three I haven’t personally tried), the Vapur stands up well while filling, and doesn’t collapse even when only half-full.

Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle

Featuring a unique, patented design, the Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle is capable of adapting itself to your needs, even in the most demanding conditions.

Without a doubt, its versatility is impressive, and it makes it the kind of object everyone can use.

Ergonomic, portable and practical, this collapsible water bottle certainly holds great value despite being slightly more expensive than your average water bottle.

In order to save space when it is not being used, the Nomader water bottle can be either folded or collapsed flat.

This is remarkable considering its rigidity and stability when it’s in its unfolded, erect state.

Apart from being solid and having a great balance, the upright bottle is tough and durable.

In fact, being made of shatterproof silicone, it’s resistant to impact, heat and more.

Even better, the Nomader is completely leak-proof, making it a truly reliable water bottle.

Everyone knows water bottles can be difficult to clean.

Luckily, the Nomader’s design also makes it very accessible for cleaning purposes.

What is more, it’s remarkably hygienic during the drinking process due to its hinged cap that doubles as an anti-germ protective spout cover.

In addition, the bottle is completely BPA-free, BPS-free and resistant to phthalic acids and other harmful chemicals.

As if all that wasn’t enough, the Nomader is remarkably sleek and stylish.

Pros of Nomader Folding Water Bottle

  • Compact and portable
  • Easy to clean
  • Completely BPA-free
  • Flexible and yet durable
  • Very versatile
  • Great for kid’s school backpacks

Cons of Nomader Folding Water Bottle

  • Slightly more expensive than the average water bottle
  • Not UV-proof, but the Nomader water bottle is made of silicone, and will not experience fading or deterioration caused by UV.

When the collapsible water bottle is best

Airport security: easily dump liquids at security, fold and store, and refill at the gate.

Backpacking during which weight (or lack thereof) is important (use a carabiner to attach a collapsible water bottle to your pack)

When a stainless steel water bottle is better

There are good options for collapsible water bottles and they can work really well for travelers.

Osprey Verve Women’s Hydration Pack

The true test of a great backpack is not in its performance upon first use, but in how often you reach for it afterward.

As a travel gear reviewer who specializes in outdoor gear, I have a lot of backpacks sitting in wait of the next day hike or bike ride.

The folks at Osprey were kind enough to send me a Verve 5 to try out.

Ever since I reviewed the Osprey Verve women’s hydration pack, this is the backpack I reach for.

The Osprey Verve for Women Review

The Osprey Verve hydration pack for womencomes in 5L, 9L, and 13L.

a full-sized hydration bladder, hose, and mouth valve included, this pack is meant to be an all-in-one hydration solution and storage pack for both warm-weather day hikes and bike rides as well as winter sport excursions including skiing, snowshoeing, or cross-country trekking.

It also makes a great companion on travel days with plenty of walking or city touring involved.

Depending on the size chosen, the Verve can comfortably fit your day’s essentials on top of your water needs.

Verve Hydration Pack Design

I tested the Verve 5L, which I assumed would be very small, but was in fact much roomier than I’d anticipated.

I always recommend trying out packs in a brick-and-mortar store before buying online for this very reason.

While the 5L holds less storage room than some hydration packs, and has a sleek, flatter shape, it more than makes up for its smaller volume with numerous compartments to separate your stuff.

In addition to the reservoir pocket, there’s a roomy outer zip pocket with two interior compartments for a cell phone, snack, or gloves.

I’ve fit snacks for my family in this pocket, along with a hat and camera.

Secondly, there’s a stash pocket to stuff a light jacket, base layer, or thick pair of winter gloves.

Lastly, you get a small zip pocket at the top for storing keys, a cell phone, or other small essentials (perhaps sunscreen or chapstick).

On the outside are two side mesh water bottle pockets plus a helmet clip to secure a bike helmet.

I found the pack construction to be superior to other hydration packs I’ve tried: you get Osprey’s AirScape back panel to wick away moisture and provide some air flow, plus the hydration hose is secured with not only a sleeve down the shoulder strap, but a handy magnet that holds it in place.

I assumed this would be gimmicky, but now I get annoyed with any pack that does not include a magnetic valve attachment!

The Verve includes a chest strap as well as a hip belt, and a small front pocket on the shoulder strap.

Verve Hydration Reservoir

The reservoir is one of the easiest to fill that I’ve tried: to fill an Osprey, you open a large valve located on the side of the bladder and hold the reservoir flat under the water stream.

There’s a sturdy handle by which to hold it and load it back into the pack (in its own compartment, of course).

If you already have an additional Osprey pack, it’s a breeze to transfer the Verve hydration system to a large pack.

The dimensions of the 5L Verve are: IN: 18 x 9 x 6 – CM: 45 x 22 x 16

What you get:

In addition to the pockets and features mentioned below, the Verve comes with the following:

  • Blinker light attachment
  • ErgoPull hip belt
  • Lidlock technology on the hydration system
  • panel load access

Why a hydration pack?

Why choose a hydration pack over a stainless steel water bottle?

It’s a matter of preference, of course, but in my experience, I simply drink more water when I have the convenience of a hydration pack at my fingertips (so to speak).

So do my kids: when I strap a hydration pack on their backs, they happily drink water due to the ‘fun factor’ alone, whereas I have to remind them to stop to drink from their water bottles.

I also find that hydration packs need filling less often than water bottles (holding an average of 2L-3L), making them the best choice when water sources may be scarce.

Pick up a Verve 5 for day trips, day travel, and shorter outdoor excursions.

Do you use a hydration pack while traveling or experiencing the outdoors?

Best Travel Water Bottle for Kids

travel water bottle for kids

Best Travel Water Bottle for Kids – Parents who travel green are among the most responsible consumers: not only are they committed to eco-friendly products, but they demand the highest standards when it comes to the safety of their kids.

I’d like to think I’m no exception, which is why I did extensive research before purchasing stainless steel water bottles for my children.

The good news is that there are so many safe, non-plastic lined or coated options now available.

The bad news is that it’s still hard to know which bottles to invest in for your family.

Below, you’ll find my picks for the best travel water bottle for kids.

Klean Kanteen: best travel water bottle for kids

Best Travel Water Bottle for Kids

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Bottle

This classic (and one of the first stainless steel options to arrive on the scene) continues to be the most durable in our household.

My kids have been carting Klean Kanteens back and forth to school daily for 2-3 years, and they always survive drops and crashes.

Kleen Kanteen bottles will dent slightly like all stainless steel bottles, but because they’re not lined, no damage occurs from a health perspective.

For families with kids of multiple ages like mine, it’s nice that they come in the most sizes of any stainless steel bottle brand (including the small 12 oz).

As an added plus, additional tops can be purchased and interchanged; my kids prefer the sports tops, but families with babies and toddlers will love the sippy cup top option.

Klean Kanteens has a great variety of colors and sizes for kids.

They are usually less than $20.

Camelbak Better Bottle

I love that Camelbak’s Better Bottle comes with inserted “bite valve” straws for easy drinking (and less spilling!), and it doesn’t hurt that they come in such nice patterns and colors.

Even with their bite valve feature, the Camelbak Better Bottle has no moving parts, which makes cleaning easier, too.

You can get an insulated version as well (though they’re pretty hefty, and therefore a bit less travel-friendly).

A lighter insulated pick is the Hydro Flask, though they’re pricer than most families care to pay and only come in two sizes.

Pick up a Camelbak for between $14-$32, depending on size and features.

Crocodile Creek water bottle: best travel water bottle

Crocodile Creek Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Besides being cute as button, the Crocodile Creek Stainless Steel Bottle, which is made just for kids, has a nifty little cover over the top.

This cover not only reduces spills, but is more hygienic, as kids tend to let their bottles rest in the dirt, sand, and other places I probably don’t want to think about.

The bottle holds over 13 oz. Depending on the pattern and where you buy them, these range from as low as $10 to around $20.

Stainless steel vs plastic water bottle best for kids

While most water bottle brands are featuring BPA-free plastic options now, we still believe in using stainless steel day in and day out.

We’re just not all that comfortable with how the plastic may break down after use.

Also, it’s always in the back of our minds to not drink water from plastic when it’s been sitting in the sun.

So we typically choose stainless steel for kids.

Our one exception?

Air travel.

When we travel by air, our kids bring their BPA-free bladder-style water bottles.

They pack very easily (and lightly), making them perfect to carry through airport security empty to be refilled on the other side.

The downside: the cheaper brands tend to leak and use the non-safe plastics, so you definitely don’t want to bargain shop in this department.

Our favorite, which uses only Polyethylene (PET) plastic (which is not known to leach any chemicals into water), is the Platypus.

Do your kids use stainless steel water bottles? Which is your child’s favorite?

Please share your favorite brand and style in the comments!

Filtered Water Bottle Review

filtered water bottle

Filtered water bottle review – We get a lot of questions about stainless steel water bottles with filters, but until recently I hadn’t used a filtered water bottle review.

The folks at Eco Vessel were kind enough to send us a filtration water bottle to try out.

According to Eco Vessel, the blue water filtration bottle “removes up to 99.99% of pollutants.”

It’s also BPA-free, which I appreciate.

filtered water bottle review
filtered water bottle review

When to Use this Filtered Water Bottle Review

I would recommend using this bottle when you know you won’t have access to your own Brita or reverse osmosis filtered water which is why it is our top recommendation on this filtered water bottle review.

Hiking and Camping

This bottle would be great to use on extended hiking or camping trips where the water in streams is safe enough to drink, but might contain some pollutants.

I wish I’d had it when I was hiking in Patagonia.

The water there was fine, but even just removing the debris would have been a huge help.

Travel – Extended Travel

For extended trips where you’ll be traveling to places where the water is safe to drink, but potentially not tasty or totally clean, this filtration water bottle would be an excellent option.

At the Office

If your workplace doesn’t offer filtered water, this filtered water bottle would be a good choice for the office.

That way you can drink tap water and rest assured that the bulk of the pollutants are removed.

Working Out at the Gym

If you work out at a gym and are used to drinking out of the water fountain, this bottle is for you.

Fill the bottle up at the water fountain and drink it through the filter.

When to Choose A Filter-Free Bottle

For times you have access to filtered water, you won’t need to use this bottle.

And the filter inside makes it a little clunkier (and takes up space where water could be) so it’s not ideal for sports.

Everyday Use

If you’re at home or can fill up your bottle before you leave the house, you’re probably just as well off sticking with a traditional (filter-free) stainless steel water bottle.

Bike Ride

This bottle could work well for a bike ride, but I would prefer something a little less clunky with more room for water.

Travel – Short Trips

For shorter trips, especially those where you’ll likely have access to filtered water, you’ll probably want to bring a larger, filter-free bottle that you can refill.

How Does It Work?

According to the website, the Eco Vessel water filtration bottle uses an “Ionic-Adsorption Micro-Filtration system.”

I’m no expert on filtration systems, so I’m trusting that Eco Vessel’s system really does remove up to 99.99% of pollutants, as they claim.

I like the contoured shape, which makes it easy and comfortable to hole in your hand.

It also comes with a cloth handle and caribeener, which I suppose could come in handy.

Filtered Water Without Hassle

For people on the go, this bottle is ideal.

Not everywhere you go will have filtered water, but if you have your filtered water bottle, you can create your own low-pollutant water.

Stainless Steel (and BPA-free)

If you’re a regular Go Green Travel Green reader, you know we’re big fans of stainless steel water bottles because they’re lightweight and don’t contain the nasty chemical BPA.

One of our favorites is the Klean Kanteen, but their water filter isn’t quite as compact and integrated as Eco Vessel’s.

Not Made in the USA

Although the filter is made in the USA, the bottle isn’t.

That’s not surprising, though, considering we have yet to find a stainless steel water bottle made in the US.

Because of the filter inside, this bottle is a bit clunky, which might make it awkward for some athletic activities.

I would definitely recommend the Eco Vessel Blue Water Filtration Bottle to someone looking for an easy-to-use, compact filter water bottle.

The built-in filter makes it very portable and the contoured design makes it comfortable to carry.

I hope you find this filtered water bottle review helpful

Stainless Steel Travel Mug Contigo Travel Mug Review

Stainless Steel Travel Mug

Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug – We’ve written a ton about stainless steel water bottles; but as the school year approached I began to consider how I was going to transport tea to school.

We had previously gotten rid of all of our BPA-infused travel mugs…we are now BPA-Free!

So, I explored my options and settled on a Contigo Travel Mug.

Contigo was kind enough to send a few of their Contigo travel mugs (see them here) for review.

Here are my thoughts.

Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug
Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug

The Best Stainless Steel Travel Mug?

I would venture to say that the Contigo travel mug is the best stainless steel travel mug there is.

It has honestly revolutionized my life.

It’s leak proof.

Totally 100% leak proof.

So leak proof that I put it in my laptop bag (next to my laptop) filled with hot tea.

I’m not much of a risk-taker, and honestly it took me awhile to trust my Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug enough to be able trust it, but it really can be tossed in a bag and it won’t leak.

I do usually turn it up and down just to be sure it’s sealed.

Spill-Proof Stainless Steel Travel Mug

Not only does the mug not leak when I travel with it, it also is spill proof when I knock it over.

Besides the BPA-free stainless steel travel mug, Contigo also sells BPA-free plastic.

I use this to heat up water in the microwave at school to make my tea.

Probably not the best idea to put plastic in the microwave, but it works.

Stainless steel travel mug, Contigo  Insulated

Did I mention it’s double walled and vacuum sealed?

During October, when we had unseasonable cold weather and snow, I filled my Contigo travel mug with tea heading off to school.

Two hours later (after waiting for the bus outside for a good while) the tea was still warm.

I love using my Contigo for tea, but if you’re looking for a tea-specific travel mug, you might want to check out Teas Etc.’s travel mug set.

For more tea travel mugs (tea-specific travel mug ideas).

It wasn’t piping hot, but warm enough to comfortably drink.

Kids Sippy Cups

Contigo also makes their autoseal cups for kids!

Downsides to the Stainless Steel Travel Mug

My only negative thought about this mug is that it does retain smell or taste.

If you don’t wash it out right away it can really smell; we had to use a vinegar soak in it one after leaving coffee in it for a few days.

Also, since Kimberly drinks coffee and I drink tea, we’ve found that even with a good washing it still maintains the smell taste just slightly.

So, I would recommend that if you drink multiple hot beverages you get two.

Use one only for coffee and the other only for tea.

Alternatively, you could remember to wash it out every night and not leave it in the car for a week.

Would I Recommend It?

I would highly recommend Contigo’s Stainless Steel Mug for any traveler, student, or commuter.

It really will change your life.

Here’s what Contigo’s website says about their mugs:

Other Stainless Steel Travel Mugs

If you’re not interested in a Contigo, we’ve heard good things about these Stainless Steel Travel mugs (though we haven’t tried any of them):

Thermos Nissan Tea Tumbler with Infuser has free same day shipping.

Yeti Tumblers review and the review of the Walmart’s Ozark Trail Tumbler.

No matter what you use it for, the Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug is a truly fantastic product.

It’s BPA-free, safe, and convenient.

I would highly recommend it for coffee, tea, or anything else you like to drink warm.

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle Review BPA-free Bottles

travel water bottle for kids

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle – It was just over a year ago when the BPA in water bottles information flooded mainstream media (though environmentalists had been warning about it for a long time) and we wrote one of our most popular posts:

We have also recently written about Best Stainless Steel Cookware Sets and why you don’t want toxins in your kitchen.

In that post we declared our love for Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel water bottle.

A reader recently asked me to go into further detail about the Klean Kanteen bottles including my likes and dislikes of their product.

Here’s the extended version of my review.

And please note that I received absolutely no compensation or freebies for this review.

Though I wouldn’t mind a free 40 ounce bottle or Wine Karafe…

I just feel strongly about their product and the need to be BPA free.)

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle: What I Love

Klean Kanteen is BPA Free

The number one reason I purchased my Klean Kanteen water bottle was because it contains absolutely no (even trace amounts of) BPA.

For more information about the dangers of BPA check out.

Klean Kanteen is Durable

My Klean Kanteen can be thrown around and the worst thing that has happened is some scratches.

In a year it still hasn’t dented.

And it doesn’t crack the way plastic might.

Klean Kanteen has No Lining

Some stainless steel water bottles are lined with a product containing a small amount of BPA.

The Klean Kanteen is not lined with anything.

Klean Kanteen is Dishwasher Safe

When I had a dishwasher (our new house does not), it was easy to put my Klean Kanteen in the dishwasher.

Now I wash it by hand, which is simple enough as it has a wide mouth.

Loop Cap

This may seem small and insignificant, but I really love the loop cap on my Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle.

It makes it easy to attach to bags for backpacking.

Klean Kanteen is Cool

Given that it’s stainless steel, it makes sense that the Klean Kanteen stays cool in cool temperatures (see needs improvement for my thoughts about warm weather).

Klean Kanteen 27 Ounce Bottle

We have an 18 ounce bottle and a 27 ounce bottle.

The 27 ounce bottle is the perfect size for day trips or traveling or just sitting on my desk.

Plus, it’s on the skinnier side making it easy to hold.

I find the 18 ounce bottle to be a little small for most activities.

I may some day invest in a large 40 ounce Klean Kanteen for tennis matches or events where I need a lot of fluids.

Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup

While we don’t have kids, someday when we do, they’ll be drinking out of these too.

I really appreciate that Klean Kanteen makes sippy cups.

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle: Wine Karafe

Wow, this has got to be the Greatest Idea Ever!

So great I decided it needed a heading of it’s own.

A wine carafe (or Klean Kanteen Karafe if you care for the alteration).

Shatterproof, portable, and drinking wine out of it would lead people to believe you’re just drinking water.

Well, except for the fact that it says Wine Karafe on it…

But it’s made to perfectly fit a bottle of wine, and the Klean Kanteen Wine Karafe is pretty.

I like the idea of packing a bottle of wine along with my bottle of water for a day hike.

Kimberly pointed out that you could just pour your wine into a water bottle, but having Carafe seems so much cooler.

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle: What Needs Improvement

Klean Kanteen Sports Bottle Top

The sports water bottle top on the Klean Kanteen does not work well.

It makes a terrible high pitched squealing when you drink from it.

This is pretty embarrassing when you’re at the gym and everyone turns to look to see where the noise is coming from.

That said, it appears that the new sports bottle tops are different than the old.

If anyone has a new Klean Kanteen sports bottle top, I’d love to know if it works well.

Also, note that you can buy the tops separately from the main bottle allowing for easy changing depending on your activity.

Klean Kanteen Flavor

At first my Klean Kanteen left a very very slight metallic flavor in the water.

This only lasted for a few weeks and now it’s gone.

Perhaps it just needed a few more times in the dishwasher.

However, this is one of the biggest complaints that I’ve heard from others about their Klean Kanteens.

Klean Kanteen Heat

When it’s warm outside the Klean Kanteen gets hot.

Some people use the Built bags around their bottles.

I just throw some in some ice or freeze the water before I go.

Bottom Line Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle Review

The bottom line is that I love my Klean Kanteen.

Despite my short “needs improvements” list, I wouldn’t give my Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle up for anything.

They seem to be a good company and I appreciate the Klean Kanteen commitment to the environment and my personal health.

Where to Buy Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle

I tend to buy everything on, including my Klean Kanteens Stainless Steel Water Bottles.

The prices there are competitive (and we get free shipping with Amazon Prime.)

While Klean Kanteens Stainless Steel Water Bottles are little pricey – they last forever.

Just refill it 18 and it’s paid for itself.

About Klean Kanteen and their Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Here’s a bit more about Klean Kanteen (quoted from their website):

Before anybody else was making stainless steel water bottles for personal daily hydration, before the current widespread concern about health and environmental issues in relation to plastics, we were cobbling together the first Klean Kanteen prototype from things we bought at the local hardware store here in Chico, California.

The first Klean Kanteen onto the market because we wanted to give people something better than plastic: a lightweight, re-usable, body-friendly bottle free of bisphenol A (BPA); a bottle durable enough to last a lifetime; an easy-to-clean, easy-to-carry beverage container for people of all ages; a bottle that keeps drinks fresh and clean-tasting no matter how many times you refill it; a simple design engineered for function in every way.

In those early days, we shared Klean Kanteens with folks we met at music festivals, environmental fairs, outdoor recreation events, and other sorts of groovy gatherings.

“Where can I get some more of these?” they’d ask. “I love my Klean Kanteen.”

Klean Kanteen has grown over the past five years from a tiny, upstart company to a leader in the stainless beverage bottle industry.

During this time, we’ve also taken significant steps toward lowering our environmental footprint through consideration and adjustments in every aspect of our facilities and practices.

Ensuring our office paper is 100% post-consumer content, providing hand and dish soaps that are fair trade and eco-friendly, using Energy Star-certified office equipment.

These are just a few of our earth-in-mind internal operations choices.

Our commitment to sustainability also extends to the very beginning of the production process; we’ve increased oversight and conducted third-party audits of factories making our products in China to ensure they’re meeting Klean Kanteen’s high environmental and fair labor standards.

In addition to including environmental and fair labor consciousness in our business practices, we partner with local, national, and international organizations to support efforts toward health, clean drinking water, and protecting the environment.

Klean Kanteen became a member of 1% for the Planet, committing to donation of at least 1% of our annual sales to non-profits working to protect and promote the wellness of this one great Earth.
