I want my kids to drink and be hydrated, especially because we live in a dry climate. While my children bring their reusable water bottles to school each day, they don’t carry them to lunch. Usually, these drinks are in small bottles and packages, making them convenient to toss in a lunch bag or backpack and bring to school. It’s really convenient to get in the habit of tossing in a plastic disposable water bottle, especially on busy mornings when we are running behind schedule. While these water bottles fit nicely — especially the small 12 oz size — it’s not good for the environment. Yes, we are guilty of using them and try to rinse and reuse them so they last a few days. However, our goal was to find water bottles they can bring to lunch every day.

A problem for us has always been:

Even if you do find a quality bottle that can fit, doesn’t mean you will want your child to pack it. There still needs to be plenty of room for food. We really aren’t concerned with the weight of the water bottle once it’s filled.

I have sons: a tween and a teenager. Most of the smaller water bottles available have youthful patterns on them. My kids would like a bright color or a neutral color. Being they are older, they would prefer a solid color over a pattern. They won’t want to bring water bottle with a childlike design to school. Now that my kids are older — I have a teen and a tween — another problem is some of the smaller water bottles have childlike prints. My kids will not want to bring a water bottle with a dinosaur, a robot or flowers to school. They want bright, bold colors or at least something nondescript.

After reviewing dozens of water bottles through the years, we’ve learned there is a big difference in the weight of water bottles. However, because these are still overall minimal differences, even a “heavy” water bottle won’t stop us from buying it if we like other things about it.

We’re not fans of straws. This is mostly because we try to avoid anything that looks like plastic as much as possible. In addition, it’s difficult to keep straws free from mold and bacteria. It’s essential you wash them and let them air dry completely. With most water bottles that have straws, it’s very easy to remove them and drink from them.

So that’s our dream water bottle for my kids to take to lunch. We did extensive online research and research in stores and from past experience reviewing water bottles over the years. My kids have also taken their fair share of reusable water bottles in their lunchboxes through the years. Our hands-down favorite water bottle for lunchboxes and lunch bags are water bottles from Zulu water bottle.
In the warm spring and summer months during the school year, we see families who keep the water bottles in the freezer and put them in the lunches so they will be cold. We reached out to Zulu and asked them to send us these water bottles for review. We have used Zulu in the past and liked their products. From their website, it seemed they had smaller-sized bottles that would be a good fit — literally.
Zulu water bottles for kids review
Our kids have been using reusable water bottles for most of their lives. They bring them on car rides, take them to school and to their activities, and bring them on trips. Now that we have been living in the desert for four years, it’s an absolute rule they carry reusable water bottles with them everywhere. They have 32 oz sizes as well as 28 oz, 24 oz, 20 oz and 16 oz. We never had a need for a smaller water bottle until they started bringing their lunches to school.
What’s a must for us with kids glass water bottle: BPA-Free
- A lunch bag or lunchbox is only so big. Fit in the lunch bag and lunchbox

- Torque 16 ounce Tritan Kids Water Bottle – We have these in Grey/Green and Blue
- Tag 20-ounce and 22-ounce Tritan Kids Water Bottle
- Chase 12 ounce Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle – It’s a little confusing because their website describes this bottle as 12 ounce but on the label we received it says 14 oz. Nonetheless, we like this bottle.
WINNER: – The Stainless Steel Zulu Chase Water Bottle
It’s made with vacuum insulated stainless steel. It keeps my kids’ water cold. They don’t need it to remain cold for 24 hours but it’s a nice feature if that’s important for your situation. There is double wall insulation which means there won’t be condensation or sweat on the outside of the bottle. All of the parts are BPA free. This is really important because unless other water bottles state this, it could be just the drinking vessel is BPA free. You want to be sure if there is a mouthpiece and straw that these are BPA free as well, especially because they are made from plastic.
The spout is made with silicone. Zulu Athletic uses an anti-microbial additive in the silicone spouts which keeps them cleaner. I’m not a huge fan of spouts and would prefer the kids drink directly from the bottle itself, but this is a fine feature. There’s a straw which attaches to the mouthpiece.
I had my kids try it with the straw in order to make sure it works; however, we don’t use straws in water bottles because it’s one more thing to have to clean and worry about. The lid opens easily. It closes easily so the bottle remains leak proof as well. There’s also a loop so they can carry it easily. Unlike other water bottles from different companies, this part isn’t unnecessarily large.
It’s easy to grip. Something that may be a first for us is the bottle itself doesn’t seem to be painted. Many other stainless steel water bottles we own are painted the color over the stainless steel. While this looks great for a few weeks or months, after washing it and when it inevitably drops, the paint chips off. For this Zulu bottle, it seems like the color is part of the bottle and that there won’t be chipping.

Zulu Athletic also sent us their Zulu 12 oz Food Jar. We love reusable lunch containers made with stainless steel rather than plastic. Leakproof. Kept chicken warm. Didn’t take up too much room in the lunch bag. Not many plastic components — usually the lids are made with plastic parts. The issue becomes space: You can only fit so much in a lunch box.
Another issue is convenience: Our culture is for kids to grab juice boxes and Gatorades and other flavored drinks without much thought. It seems like “as long as it’s not soda,” it’s okay to bring to school. My kids don’t buy lunch, and they don’t drink milk at school. They need to drink water. They have enough sugar and treats in their lunches and the other times each day.
