Insurance — be it car, home, health, or travel — is always difficult to compare and buy. One of the most frustrating aspects of our pre-trip planning for our 4 month excursion to Argentina and Belize was finding travel insurance — specifically narrowing down travel health insurance options.

But, comparing travel insurance and deciphering health specific travel insurance options shouldn’t be complicated. So, we’ve put together a short series about how to choose travel insurance. Check out the next three posts to learn more about comparing travel insurance.

When traveling it is not enough merely to take precautions when it comes to medical care, it is essential to be prepared so you can avoid expensive and inferior treatment and it is also often a requirement for entry into certain parts of the world that you have adequate insurance.
Keep in mind that medical issues aren’t the only reason to purchase travel insurance. Many policies will reimburse you for the cost of the trip in the event that you need to cancel for unforeseen circumstances (health, family, work). If you have put down a large deposit and purchased your flights then knowing you can get your money back gives you peace of mind.

There are many different types of travel insurance available and when purchasing you has to make sure you are getting the right coverage for when you arrive on your travels. Making sure health coverage is a key aspect of any insurance as there are always of examples you read of travellers not having the right insurance and paying hundreds and even thousands on health care. With more people going on round the world trips it is more crucial that people consider lost of luggage as the chances of those happening increases with the amount of moving about is done in a number of months. A major factor for travel insurance is theft and damage which happens in the more tourist hotspots and depending on where you go travelling it is best to check the crime rate to check and make sure that your coverage is effective to all your belongings.
Thanks for that, I often have to travel on business and while I have never found fault with the hotels, but the actual travel, packing, security (like insurance) can be immensely stressful. I will definitely be using this information in future now that I tend to use rail services a lot more.
