Buying World Nomads Travel Insurance (Reviews)

One of the things I posted about in my checklist of things to do before a trip was finding travel insurance (specifically, insurance that would cover health emergencies while I’m abroad, even though it’s not completely “travel health insurance”).

World Nomads Travel Insurance Reviews

After sorting through numerous websites and reviews, we’ve settled on World Nomads travel insurance.

World Nomads travel insurance has competitive prices and what seems to be a solid policy.  I’ve read a number of posts and reviews by people who have actually had to made claims on their World Nomads travel insurance policies.  (To me it doesn’t help to read reviews by folks who’ve never made a claim.)  Turns out World Nomads travel insurance has, for the most part, been extremely helpful, according to the reviews.

That is, in the World Nomads Travel Insurance Reviews, people said that they had good success on their claims. World Nomads reviews included claims for a dropped camcorder, lost jacket, and other valuables.

World Nomads Reviews: Take 2

Of all of the Worlds Nomads reviews I read, there was only one bad one.

There was one complaint by a person who was angry that World Nomads travel insurance didn’t pay a claim on a stolen backpack because it was “unattended.” But the complaint was the exception, and most people had positive things to say in their World Nomads travel insurance reviews.

My Personal World Nomads Review

Update: We used World Nomads travel insurance for the entirety of our trip abroad. My overall review is that it was good. We luckily never had to make a claim, but knowing that the World Nomad reviews were positive we felt that if we had been in trouble World Nomads would have been there to help. Thus, while our personal experience with World Nomads was positive, it’s probably more important to note that other World Nomads travel insurance reviews were good.

I was even happier to read that World Nomads Travel Insurance is doing their part to give back.  World Nomads offers you the chance to contribute to various social, health, and educational programs when you make your purchase.  On their website World Nomads writes:

“If you think you are too small to make a difference you haven’t been in bed with a mosquito.”

In 2007, WorldNomads.com and our customers funded 300 sight-saving surgeries, built a primary school and repaired another, trained over 200 teachers and helped 40 kids get through school, gave a whole village solar-lighting, installed water and sanitation facilities in 3 schools and 2 villages, provided educational supplies in 4 schools and medicines to 3 communities and 4 orphanages, helped create two kitchen gardens and buy 300 egg-laying chickens, built capture fog-nets for fresh drinking water and provided a safe-home for girls of sex workers.

  1. Have a great trip girls! I can’t wait to read about your adventures!

  2. Great tip. I’ve only ever used MEDEX Assist and MedJet Assist. Glad to know about other options.

  3. @Beth - Thanks for the tip about MEDEX and MedJet; next time I need insurance I’ll take a look at them.

  4. We’re still sorting this out. The main thing we’re trying to figure out is coverage back in the U.S. Most of these policies only cover you abroad, which in 99% of cases is all you need. But there’s that 1% chance that something terrible happens and you get evacuated back to the U.S. (covered by policies like World Nomads). The problem is that once you get back, these travel policies no longer cover you. So if something terrible happens and you end up evacuated back here needing extensive health care, you’re in big trouble. I think in general most people just cross their fingers and hope to be the 99% that don’t have to worry about. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that though…

  5. @Theresa - I think it’s a difficult thing to sort out. Yes, most people get back and are fine. We were. But I’m glad we read the World Nomads reviews first.

  10. World Nomads might be ok, but the USA underwriters SUCK. They have massive fine print / exclusions to weasel their way out of paying for a claim. Just look up all the negative reviews for Access America. World Nomads is only as good as their underwriters. For Americans, the service blows.

  11. I’m traveling again, this time being much smarter about shopping for Travel Ins after my last fiasco with ACCESS AMERICA who basically suck big time. There are fine lines in all areas of Insurance, that’s why it is a gamble no matter what company or what kind of coverage you buy into. Had I read the reviews about ACCESS AMERICA before I purchased, I wouldn’t have done so. I’ve also not stopped pestering Delta Airlines about how horrible they are and they should re-consider referring customers SOLELY to them. That said, I appreciate the high recommendation from a very trusted source regarding World Nomads, and I appreciate all the pro/con reviews from you all. Safe & Happy travels!
