Traveling Green: Still the 3 Best Tips

Happy Earth Day 2011!  If you’re looking for a way to help the environment while traveling – you’re in the right place.  If you’re looking for things to do today specifically, check out Kimberly’s post about 10 Things to Do on Earth Day.

In celebration of Earth Day we’d like to offer what continue to be the best three tips for traveling green:

Traveling Green Tips

1. Reduce

  • Reduce the number of plane rides you take
  • Reduce the number of multi-stop flights you take (opt instead for nonstop flights)
  • Reduce the number of car trips you take (instead fix your car for hypermiling)
  • Reduce your non local food consumption and opt instead to be a traveling locavore
  • Reduce your energy consumption while staying at a hotel
  • Reduce your energy consumption at home while you’re away
  • Lots more about reduction in this series

2. Reuse

  • Reuse water bottles and quit buying bottled water
  • Use storage containers like a Wrap-n-Mat for food
  • Go thrift store shopping and reuse clothes
  • Instead of buying new technology, buy used

3. Recycle

  • Recycle at home
  • Recycle at work
  • Recycle while traveling (even if it means having to carry it with you through the airport until you get to a recycle bin)

If you just do one thing this year, focus on reducing. You’ll save money and you’ll be traveling greener.  Now, get off your computer and spend some time outside enjoying Earth Day!

  17. Hi there,

I find these tips invaluable, especially the multi trips one. Often it is slightly cheap to do multi trip, but you increase carbon emmisions and also have to wait around at the airport for your connection…

Do you have any green travel suggestions for families with small children? Often a plane is the only sensible travel route for them..

    Thanks

    Duncan

  18. These are great tips. Thanks for sharing but don’t forget, there are great ways to reduce at home when you are away too like unplugging appliances and lowering the heat and cooling. Keep lights on a timer for safety but also to reduce usage as well. Green Travel Rocks
