Here’s a great hack that we just used to save $75 on our American Airlines flights for the holidays.
Cardpool, a gift card exchange site, has all their American Airlines flight gift cards on sale for 10% off. Normally, I’m a) too skeptical to buy something like this and b) don’t plan ahead enough to take advantage of these types of offers, but the savings involved here was just too much to pass up.
All you have to do to get the 10% off is buy the gift cards through the cardpool site where they are currently offer 10% off (they also have Southwest Airlines gift cards.)
Here are some things to know:
1) You can use up to 8 gift cards when booking your airfare on AA.com (full fine print here). We ended up using 3 and had no problems.
2) Cardpool guarantees the cards’ values and these AA cards never expire. As I said, we purchased 3 cards, all at 10% off, and purchased our American Airlines tickets on the AA.com site with no problems.
3) Unfortunately the gift cards are in high demand and there aren’t always cards available. I recommend signing up for the wishlist feature where you are automatically sent an email when a card is listed. Act quickly when you get the email otherwise someone else may buy the gift cards before you. We had to wait about 3 days until there were gift cards available for us to buy.
4) The cards took 4 – 5 days to arrive at our house. (Shipped from California). Airfare dropped between the time we purchased the tickets and the time the cards arrive so I was worried that the sale would expire. So, I put the tickets on a 24 hour hold and it all worked out. But, be sure to plan in advance.
This was the first time I had ever used a site like Cardpool and I was very happy with the results. It’s not often you can save 10% on Airfare these days – so take advantage of the coupon discount while you can.
