Where to Rent a Hybrid Rental Car

by Elizabeth on January 30, 2008

Looking to rent a hybrid car? I wish I could say “look no further.” But unless you’re traveling to the West Coast in the U.S., you’re likely to be out of luck. Most of the big car rental companies currently don’t stock hybrids, but there are a few that do:

Of the major online travel agents, only Orbitz allows you to search for “green car” rentals. You can rent a hybrid vehicle in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington. According to the site, the hybrid cars are rented through Alamo, Avis, Budget, Fox, Hertz and National.

Fox Rent a Car currently offers hybrids at their 7 locations: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Orange County, San Jose, Oakland, Phoenix. You can rent hybrid versions of the Toyota Camry and unspecified SUVs and Hondas. Fox offers a 5% off coupon for hybrid car rentals on their website.

EV Car Rentals claims to be the “Nation’s only environmental car rental company.” They are partners with Fox Rent a Car locations so you can rent at the same 7 locations as Fox.

Bio-Beetle Rental Cars is a fun option – they rent VW Beetles that run on Bio-Diesel. But to rent one of these cars you’ll have to be lucky enough to be visiting (or living in) Maui, Hawaii.

Bio Beetle

Hertz recently announced that in June of this year, they will a add 2400 Toyota Prius (which are always hybrid) to their fleet. They are supposedly available at 50 locations, but I’d recommend calling Hertz to make sure one is available in the city you’re visiting.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, you can rent a Toyota Prius from Western Road Trips.

And Enterprise is jumping on the green bandwagon with their Keys to Green website. According to the site, “Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car represent the world’s largest fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles with more than 440,000 vehicles that average a highway fuel efficiency rating of at least 28 mpg and more than 237,000 that average 32 mpg or better.”

If you aren’t able to rent a hybrid car (or a cute bio-diesel Beetle), consider renting a smaller car. A two-door Ford Focus is not only much easier on the environment than an H2 Hummer – it’s cheaper, too.

The car rental industry has been shifted to being more globally minded. It is amazing what the response has been already to hybrid vehicles in the fleet. Going green just makes sound sense, not just for consumers but also for companies.

I wouldn’t hire a beetle at all. But maybe another VW. Do you have any car rental post for the UK. I am going there next month and would like to find out about accommodation and car rentals there, maybe even the public transport in Europe? But some of these companies you listed are in Europe so I’ve check those out. Thanks

If you have plans on going to Israel and decided to rent a car, try Avis Eilat car rental. It’s highly recommended by individuals I trust and who have exceptional travel experience.
