Ski Green: Hit the Slopes without Melting them

As you might have noticed, the weather recently has been nothing short of strange (or scary - take your pick). And with increasing temperatures in even far-north regions of the world, ski resort owners are among those hit hardest by global warming.

Sunday’s Washington Post had a short but solid article on ski resorts feeling the burn of “climate change” and the proactive measures they’re taking to prevent it.

And on January 21, Huffington Post highlighted a New York Times article about a ski resort in the Swiss Alps that sold for less than $1 US after a season of decreasing snowfall and rising costs.

But the issue of ski resorts melting away into oblivion is hardly new - just ask people in Salt Lake City, Aspen, and the French Alps.

If you love skiing but want to decrease your environmental impact, think about skiing closer to home, going to a greener ski resort, or taking up cross-country skiing, which burns fewer resources (and more calories).

In the above Post article, NRDC’s Daniel Lashof sums it up well, “From my perspective, being a good environmentalist isn’t about giving up the activities that we enjoy doing; it’s about doing them smart.”
