Sign Spotting: Beer and Girls $3.00
Two questions came to mind when I saw this sign on the side of Hummingbird Highway near Hopkins, Belize:
- $3.00 Belizian or $3.00 American? ($1 American = $2 Belize)
- And $3.00 each for beer and girls, or $3.00 total?
Unfortunately, we didn’t stop to find out. I guess we’ll never know the answers.

Hehehe! That’s too funny!
While the sign may be good for a quick laugh, it speaks to a wider problem of exploitation of women. Throughout Central America and, I’m sure, other countries around the world, the problem of exploitation of women is one of the many issues to be dealt with. No less so in my country Belize, where strict laws are in place to mitigate those existing problems.
In this particular case, the ‘owner’ of that establishment was visited by a Social Worker friend of mine from the government’s Social Services Department, and in no uncertain terms, told to remove it or run afoul of the law.
He has since complied, to the benefit, I think, of the beautiful village of Armenia, Belize (nowhere near Hopkins, by the way).
