Jaguar Crossing: Road Signs at Tikal National Park

There are 18 km (11 miles) between the main entrance of Tikal National Park, Guatemala and the actual visitor’s gate where you can walk the grounds. Unfortunately for anxious visitors, but fortunately for the many animals of Tikal, the speed limit between these entrances is only 45km/hr (27 mph). And it’s enforced. It’s incredibly ironic that this is the smoothest paved road in Guatemala. But I digress.

The drive through thick jungle felt long as after 5 hours of driving we were excited to get to the Mayan Ruins. But the signs posted along the road gave us hope for animal sightings. In then end, we only saw a the Turkey and Coati (you can read Kimberly’s post about Tikal’s animals). But the signs are fun and not road signs you’d see on your average day of driving anywhere else in the world. Check them out:
