Some Good Posts over at at EcoTravelLogue
The BootsandAll Travel Network’s EcoTravelLogue has had some posts lately that are particularily helpful for green travelers. Here are some of our favorites:
In a post about green hostels they write:
How can I tell if [hostels] are truly eco-friendly? Many countries have specific eco accreditation so you should check for this when you’re booking. If they don’t have an obvious sign or certification, ask them to email or show you their green credentials. Look out for these signs:
* In Europe- the EU Eco Flower label.
* In America - STEP, the Sustainable Tourism Eco-Certification Program.
* In Australia- the Eco Certification Program which has three levels depending on the accommodation. There is talk of this program becoming an international symbol as it’s working so well down under and internationally.
* Also, keep an eye out for Green Globe, a benchmarking system, and the International Ecotourism Standard which have both been based on the Aussie Eco Certification Program.
And they also have a fun post about tips for Safe Turtle Watching which includes these tidbits:
Nesting turtles like their beaches dark and quiet; avoid flash pictures, strong flashlights, fires, loud noises, vehicles and even light-colored clothing.
Hire local guides; they will best know where and how to spot turtles and prevent stress to them once found.
