The Best Search Engines for Nonstop Flights: 25 Days of Green Travel, Day 8

by Elizabeth

I’m a bit of an airfare search engine geek. I love searching websites and flight aggregators to try to find the cheapest plane ticket possible. As I’ve become more conscious of my environmental impact, this also means searching for nonstop flights. Unfortunately, I’ve found that many websites don’t make this easy.

As a green traveler you too should search for nonstop flights, since much of the fuel burned on airplanes occurs during take-off and landing. So, to assist you in your efforts to search for nonstop flights I’ve put together this list of websites that offer 1-click non-top preference buttons on the front page of the sites.

On all of these websites you can check a box to indicate that you prefer nonstop flights.

Nonstop Flight Travel Search Engines: 1-Click

Kayak Cheap Flights
Sidestep
CheapTickets Flights
Booking Buddy
Orbitz Flights

For comparison, here are the websites that don’t offer front page no-stop preference buttons. Most of these sites offer nonstop once you’ve done your initial search, but not before.

Farecast
Fare Compare
InsideTrip
Fare Chase
Mobissimo
Dohop
Sky Scanner
Vayama
Cheapo Air
Expedia
Travelocity
Momondo

I hope this list saves you time and energy searching for nonstop flights. More importantly, I hope it saves the environment as more people choose to pass up multi-leg flights.

The Best Search Engines for NonStop Flights is the eighth post in Go Green Travel Green’s 25 Days to Green Travel series. You can see the complete list of articles in the 25 Days to Green Travel Index.

Hi Elisabeth. On http://www.whichbudget.com we have been looking at making our site eco-friendly. Perhaps you could have a look and make some suggestions.

That’s a good point about the non-stop flight button. Dohop.com is a client of mine so I’ll piont it out to them.

Another thing I would like to point out is that in those cases where you can not find a direct flight, choosing the right connections is very important. I know http://www.dohop.com is developing a map were you will be able to see the route you are flying. That will help you to choose the shortest, quickest and the greenest way to your destination.

Dohop claims to have over 50.000 connections you can not find anywhere else, so it’s worth the try.

I’ll let you know when the map is up so you can check it out.

Cheap Flights at Idealo April 30, 2010 at 2:03 am

There are a couple of other websites that offer the same possibilities. Most of the time it is definitely a hassle when you are tempted into believing you found an afforable flight – even if only briefly – yet to find out it is not direct. Not to mention the un-green-ness of the whole operation. For flights I most regularly use Idealo’s price comparison machine that will automatically go for the non-stop flights, here to find cheap and direct flights.

Elizabeth,

I just ran across this post. In the 2 years since you wrote it, have you found any better solutions?

I was pretty excited, because my new website (http://www.quickairlink.com) focuses on letting travelers quickly find nonstop flights. You can find all nonstop flights that originate in a city with just one click. You can compare all nonstops by every airline from any airport with just two clicks.

Do you think that this would be helpful for green travelers?

Save the environment…

You can’t really be as stupid as this makes you seem. Or, can you?
